I was born in Lancaster and educated in Preston.
In 1968 I graduated from Leeds University with an Honours degree in Law and I qualified as a Solicitor in 1972 following articles of clerkship with Lancaster City Council’s Town Clerk.
Two years of intense legal work in Merseyside ended in 1974 with my appointment as Assistant Town Clerk of Chesterfield Borough Council for five years – and marriage to Elaine leading to the birth of our two sons in 1975 and 1977.
Between 1979 and 1993 I was employed as Deputy Borough Solicitor, Borough Solicitor and Deputy Chief Executive at Preston Borough Council where a wide range of duties included Planning Advice / Advocacy and Industrial Development such as that which was achieved at Preston Docks (Riversway).
Since then I have specialised in Employment Law work in the private sector.
My main leisure interests have been golf and Lake District fell-walking.
