None of us wants to consider our own mortality, and it’s all too easy to put off making a Will until “tomorrow”. But for the sake of those we love, we owe it to them to ensure they are properly provided for under the terms of a Will, and that things are made as easy as possible for them at a very difficult time.
Family and friends have to be the first consideration when drawing up a Will, and it’s essential that their interests are placed first. However, leaving a bequest, or gift to a charity under the terms of a Will can guarantee your support for the charity continues long into the future. Your gift will ensure that Derian House will be there for future generations of children and young people, standing as a lasting reminder of your generosity and concern.
We would always recommend that you consult a solicitor who will give you professional advice and hold a copy of your Will for safekeeping. Even if you think that your affairs are straightforward, it’s worth consulting a professional to ensure that your wishes are carried out as you would wish.
A charitable bequest will also minimise the amount of inheritance tax you will have to pay, as gifts to a charity are generally exempt from tax, and such a gift can bring the overall value of your estate within the existing Inheritance Tax band.
You should also review your Will regularly. Simple changes can be made using a codicil, a separate document which must be witnessed and kept safely with your existing Will. Once again, we would recommend using the services of a solicitor to have your Will redrafted.
There are a number of ways in which you can leave a gift to charity…
A Residuary Bequest which is a share or percentage of your estate
A Pecuniary Bequest which is a gift of money
A Specific Bequest which is a specific object such as a painting or jewellery.
We have a very informative Legacies and Gifts in Memory brochure which provides comprehensive information about the steps to take when considering making a Will. If you would like a copy of the brochure, please contact the Fundraising Team on 01257 271 271.
Please consider leaving a legacy to Derian House. You’ll be making the most of every moment for children whose moments are all too few…..
