The Care Team

Drawing on experience gained over the past fifteen years, the Care Team has refined and developed its range of care techniques and support strategies.

The Team provides a high level of care and support to children and their families. Utilising a multi-disciplinary structure the team is comprised of a wide range of professionals including nursing, medical, physiotherapy, play and bereavement support staff. The emphasis is on giving support to children and their families via an holistic approach which includes therapeutic activities provided by a play specialist, physiotherapy and hydrotherapy including Jacuzzi sessions, and aromatherapy treatments, along with massage and relaxation techniques. Additional stimuli are provided via pet therapy and music therapy to encourage interaction throughout a child’s stay within the hospice, both on a day care basis and via the hospice at home facility.

The Care Team works diligently to develop areas that meet the specific needs of children and their families. Targeted areas include the needs of adolescents, across the board educational requirements, specific needs within the requirements for parental and sibling support, and support through age related play.

Derian House has an enviable reputation in setting new standards of excellence in children’s hospice care. Indeed much of the palliative and respite work initiated by Derian House in the years since it opened in 1993 is now emulated throughout the UK. A visible testament to the high standards of treatment practised at the hospice are the highly sought after places on its professional days, which seek to make Derian House care and support regimes available to other health care professionals. It is this reputation, not only for its treatment techniques, but also for its outstanding care system, which has led to its support of more than 200 families in the North West.

The Care Team endeavours to liaise with all professionals involved in the care of the child to ensure a structured care approach. This in turn strives for the best in clinical practice, in conjunction with a caring compassionate support network sensitive to the needs of the whole family.
