Make a Will Month

Sign-up to Make a Will Month to help your family and Derian House

A bequest to Derian House will ensure its future for many years to come as a continuing haven for those children and their families who need the special care it can offer. Your gift will make certain that Derian House will be there for future generations of children, standing as a lasting reminder of your generosity and concern…

Derian House Children’s Hospice has joined forces with a team of solicitors to offer a free Will writing service, in return for a donation to the charity.

Throughout the month of May, six legal firms throughout the region have agreed to give their time and expertise for free to raise money for the children and young people at Derian House.

People will be able to write or update their Will in return for a suggested donation of £100 for a single Will, or £175 for a joint Will – a substantial saving to the usual cost.

Those taking part will also know their future planning has made a real difference to families across Lancashire and South Cumbria, cared for by the hospice.

A Will is the most important thing you can do to protect your family’s future. Whether you’re moving house, starting a family, getting married, or facing any change in your family’s circumstance, by writing or updating your will you can relax, safe in the knowledge that should the worst happen, your family will be looked after.

A Will is also a way of helping charities such as Derian House, which relies heavily on donations to provide the vital care to children and young people with life-limiting or life-shortening conditions.

Susie Poppitt, Fundraising Consultant at Derian House Children’s Hospice, said: “None of us wants to consider our own mortality, and it’s all too easy to put off making a Will until ‘tomorrow’. But for the sake of those we love, we owe it to them to ensure they are properly provided for under the terms of a Will, and that things are made as easy as possible for them at an emotionally traumatic time.

“A Will doesn’t just cover finances and property, but also legal guardians for your children, funeral arrangements and any donations you’d like to leave to charity. Those participating in Make a Will Month have no obligation to leave a gift to Derian House, but should they do so, they will be helping to ensure the charity can continue to help future generations of children and young people, standing as a lasting reminder of their generosity.

“We’re really grateful to all of the solicitors who have kindly given up their time and expertise for free.”

Make a Will Month is a chance to help so many people, both your own and many other families across Lancashire and South Cumbria.

The money raised will go towards funding the work of Derian House Children’s Hospice, the children they care for, and the parents, siblings and friends they support.

The initiative also reminds and encourages the rest of us to think about our own families and make sure that loved ones are protected should the worst happen.

Few people actually want to talk about death and dying, but sadly it is something that touches us all at some point.

Isn’t it better to have everything planned and decided before things take turn for the worse?

Wouldn’t you want to make sure your loved ones are reassured, your assets protected, your business secure?

We understand it can be a difficult conversation, but we do this every day and we can help you navigate this sensitive subject in a sympathetic and straightforward manner.

Vincents is supporting Make a Will Month this May as part of pledge to raise money throughout the year for Derian House and honour the incredible work the team there does every single day.

By-gum! Fiona and Katie paste the London Marathon for a new world record

RECORD-breaking runners Fiona May Beaty and Katie Simpson brushed aside the competition when they smashed the Guinness World Record for running the London Marathon while dressed as a tooth and toothpaste!

The friends raised more than £2,000 for Derian House Children’s Hospice with their off-the-wall challenge, and have attracted the attention of news crews from across the country.

The pair finished in 3 hours 51 minutes and gained the titles: fastest marathon dressed as a tooth (female) and fastest marathon dressed as a toiletry item (female).

They comfortably broke the former world record of 4 hours 15 minutes as a tooth and 4 hours 54 minutes as a toiletry item.

Fiona, a dentist at from Tyneside, said: “It was an amazing experience. All the way round the crowd were shouting: ‘Go toothpaste… and tooth!’

“The costume was incredibly hot – it was like running in a wedding dress – and in the end I was only wearing a bra underneath the outfit. My patients think I’m mad, but they’ve been behind me the whole way.”

The madcap idea came from Katie, a Cleveland Police officer, who wanted to find a way of building some enthusiasm in her children. The youngsters had lost interest after supporting their mum at the last nine London Marathons, and the world record attempt was an incentive to lure them to the capital!

But getting the costumes past Guinness’ strict criteria was no mean feat. Fiona’s tooth outfit was rejected on the first four attempts on the grounds of it not being rigid enough, not long enough, and not anatomically correct.

Finally, the outfits were signed-off and the runners could start a strict training schedule to ensure they could go the distance in the suits.

Derian House is a cause close to Fiona’s heart, as her good friends are supported by the charity.

Caroline Taylor, Communications and Marketing Manager at Derian House Children’s Hospice, said: “We’re over-the-moon that Fiona and Katie chose to support Derian House with this unique – and quite frankly, hilarious – challenge. The money they have raised will make a real difference to children with life-limiting and life-shortening conditions from across the North West and we can’t thank them enough.”

Families flock to Stars & Cars 2019

Thousands came to meet their heroes – and all for a good cause – at the glittering Stars & Cars event, held today at Bolton Arena.

Soap stars Nikki Sanderson and Nicole Barber-Lane from Hollyoaks, and Sue Cleaver (Eileen Grimshaw from Coronation Street), were joined by the likes of Cold Feet actor John Thompson, Gladiator Saracen and Eggheads Barry Simmons and Pat Gibson, to raise money for Derian House Children’s Hospice.

Out in force were also characters from movie favourites including Star Wars, Predator, Terminator, and even The Stig from Top Gear made an appearance.

Eight-year-old Charlie Carter, who visited the event with dad David, said: “It’s been really good. My favourite thing has been seeing the Batmobile Tumblr. It was awesome.”

The Stars & Cars event also saw families getting up close to their favourite vehicles from the big screen, including the Batmobile, Optimus Prime, Ecto-1 from Ghostbusters, Maverick’s bike from Top Gun, and even Lightning McQueen from Disney’s Cars.

For Game of Thrones fans there was the chance to sit in the iron throne and meet Khaleesi, and live music fans were treated to Queen classics by a Freddie Mercury tribute artist.

World record-holding freestyle footballer and CBBC TV presenter John Farnworth was on hand to wow the crowd with his awesome skills, and Disney princesses posed for photographs with star-struck boys and girls.

Organiser Mick Croskery, Community Fundraiser at Derian House Children’s Hospice, said: “This year’s Stars & Cars event has been the biggest and best yet. It just keeps getting better every year. We’ve had a sell-out crowd and it’s been amazing seeing the children’s faces when they meet their favourite stars.
“Organising the event takes and incredible amount of work from a lot of people and I’d like to thank all of the staff and volunteers who have given up their time to come today to help raise money for the children and young people at Derian House – you’ve done them proud.”
Stars & Cars 2016 and 2017 events raised almost £20,000 for the charity.
