Care Quality Commission Rating
The hospice has recently undergone a full inspection by the Care Quality Commission with whom Trustees, Senior Managers and Care Team staff have worked closely on numerous occasions. Trustees and staff received verbal feedback in October, with a draft written report with more detailed information made available in January.
Whilst the hospice has been rated “Good”, both for its care provision and its response to the needs of the children, young people and families it supports, the CQC has asked for some improvement in the effectiveness, safety and way in which it is led.
However, the CQC reported it received nothing but positive feedback from people, relatives and external professionals about the care provided at Derian House, with end of life and palliative care provided with professionalism, empathy and dignity.
Said, Julie Atherton, acting Chief Executive Officer and Clinical Director for Derian House, “We constantly strive for the highest possible standards of care in looking after the needs of the children and young people we care for, and the families we support.
Whilst our rating was slightly lower than at our previous inspection in 2016, we found much to recommend the hospice in the CQC’s comments about the care and services we provide, with those services constantly being developed and expanded in line with local demand and individual families’ needs.
As an organisation, we are of course focussing attention on the CQC’s comments to take up their recommendations, with the Trustees and Senior Management Team already in the process of developing and implementing an action plan to address any areas of concern identified by the CQC.
In the meantime, Derian House will continue to provide the high level of specialist hospice care and support for which it is renowned to children, young people and families throughout the North West.”
