Morecambe Bay – Arnside to Kent’s Bank Station

Details:

Join us for a fantastic day out, walking the iconic Morecambe Bay Sands in support of the care provided at Lancashire’s only children’s hospice, Derian House.

This will be our 24th year of walking across the sands for Derian House. This year the new Queen’s guide to the sands, Michael Wilson, will lead us across the beautiful bay as we raise funds for our children and young people.

Setting off from the picturesque village of Arnside, this eight-mile walk to Kents Bank Station takes between three and four hours. Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

It costs almost £4 million to keep the doors open at Derian House and yet less than ten per cent of this comes from government funding. For the rest, we must rely on the generosity of our supporters and events such as this walk.

Registration costs £15 per adult and £8 per child (aged 16 and under), including a Derian House baseball cap to wear on the day and the booking fee that the Guide Over Sands Trust have introduced this year.

All sponsorship money raised will make such a difference to the children and young people we care for, and their families.

Places are strictly limited so don’t miss out – reserve your place today! Book here

Getting there:

By car: We suggest you park at Kents Bank station so that, when the walk finishes, your car will be waiting for you. There is limited free car parking on the bay side of Kentsford Road. The postcode for Kents Bank station is LA11 7BG.

You can either take the train from Kent’s Bank station to Arnside (10 mins) or, if you choose to park on the Arnside side of the bay, you will need to take a train back across from Kent’s Bank at the end of the walk.

By train: Leave the car at home and travel to and from Arnside and Kents Bank by train. More information and tickets are available at www.nationalrail.co.uk

FAQ’s

What should I wear?
Be prepared to get wet! The walk crosses the River Kent so your feet and legs will get wet. Make sure to wear appropriate shoes and clothes – we recommend old comfortable trainers or shoes rather than expensive walking boots. Bring a change of clothing for after the walk, and don’t forget it can get breezy out on the sands, even if the sun is out, so bring a waterproof layer.
*Please note: wellies are NOT suitable for this walk

How fit do I need to be?
This walk is suitable for people of all ages. The route is approximately 8 miles long with flat terrain. You will be wading through water in the river channels and walking on soft wet sand for the majority of the route. It can be tricky traversing the salt marshes at the end of the walk, if the weather has been wet

Is food and drink provided?
We recommend that you bring drinking water and any snacks you may want for the walk. There are shops and cafes in Arnside where you can purchase food and drink before the start of the walk

Is it wheelchair accessible?
Unfortunately this event is not suitable for wheelchair users

Can I bring a pram?
No

Can I bring my dog?
Yes, well-behaved dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead

What happens if it is raining?
This event is weather reliant, due to the nature of the sands and crossing the River Kent. We rely on The Guide Over Sands Trust guidance as to whether or not it is safe to go ahead with the walk. All participants will be required to provide a mobile number at registration, which we can contact you on should the walk need to be cancelled due to inclement weather

What happens if the event is cancelled?
We will always do our very best to go ahead with the walk, but your safety is of the utmost importance. In event of cancellation, the walk will be rescheduled at the earliest possible date.

Where are the closest toilets?
Public toilets are available at Arnside Train Station. Please note that there are no toilets available at Kents Bank Station.  At the end of the walk, the nearest public toilets are at Grange-Over-Sands train station.

How many people will be taking part?
We have reserved 450 places. Registration will be busy, as will the start and finishing areas so please make sure you arrive in plenty of time.
